2018 Update so far…

26th June 2018

So much has happened at the foodbank over the last few months; here is a quick round up:

Milestones

March 2018 saw us mark three years since opening in 2015.  During that time our numbers have grown steadily but we have also increased the provision of advice services available; Money Advice Plus, CAP, BHESCO and Home Group now all have a regular presence at the foodbank and we hope to continue expanding that further.  Watch this space!

We also fed our three thousandth person since opening our doors.  We are grateful to the support of the community – without your donations we could not have supported so many.

Tesco Collection

In April we had another very successful collection at the Hove Tesco superstore where we collected over a tonne of food in one day!  We had amazing help from the students from the HOMED society and Tracey the Community Champion is a great support.  Thanks to the generosity of the shoppers in Hove that day!

End of Year Statistics

In May we published our annual figures which showed a 40% rise in uptake on the year before – a truly shocking statistic.  The Argus covered this story in some depth and also shared the story of Tony, one of our clients.  We were so grateful to Tony for bravely sharing his story and helping people to understand the true nature of foodbank usage rather than some of the myths that can be traded in the media.

Asda: Fight Hunger, Create Change

We were delighted when Asda announced a nationwide project of investment in both the Trussell Trust and Fareshare of over £20 million over three years, helping us to offer a wider range of food in the future and also leading to the donation of surplus food over time.

In the short term it has meant we have the pleasure of Anton Binder, the Community Champion for the Marina store, joining us on our volunteer team every Wednesday at the foodbank.

We are also pleased to announce we now have a permanent collection point in the store for donations.

We look forward to continuing and developing our partnership with Asda.

Ongoing support

We have written to many of our major supporters to recently to offer a personal thank you, but recently we were so pleased to receive wonderful collections by East Brighton Labour, Dragonflies toddler group and Patcham High school.

We are also overwhelmingly grateful to our regular financial donors who enable us to provide additional services and goods when required.  Details of how to give on our website here.

If your organisation, church or business would like to help us then please be in touch at [email protected].  We would love to hear from you!
